When planning your Maui photography session – whether it’s your maternity photos, engagement photos, or family photos – you want to wear something that’s comfortable, a bit tropical, and has just a touch of whimsy. At least, that’s always my approach to photo sessions!
The last few photo sessions (including my amazing maternity session on Kauai) I’ve worn some version of a white dress with my hair and makeup done and a haku on my head.
For those of you already lost, a haku is a flower crown, but Hawaiian style! I know, it’s on trend right now and the big magazines may say that it won’t be next month. But I’ve never followed what the crowd thinks is “cool” anyway. Believe me. I still wear Chuck Taylors and play video games. I’m 31, by the way.
Just to demonstrate how hakus can up your photo game, I’ve inserted some pictures below to show you the difference it makes!

I look like a fairy princess, right?! Seriously though. If you’re coming all the way to Maui for a photo session, you might as well do it right!
And that brings me to the beautiful Nicole.
Nicole is a master haku-maker. I’ve been following her on Instagram and decided that I wanted to work with her! So a few weeks ago I popped by her super cute house (the kind that you only see in those sleek, modern home type magazines) to watch her make some hakus and get the scoop on her business!
My name is Nicole and I’m 3rd generation born and raised in Hawaii. I come from a very creative family. Specifically, my grandmother was huge into gardening, her property was a maze of flowers, foliage, and fruits.
I would spend my summer days collecting flowers and weaving haku leis with my Grandma Sue with the likes of Robi Kahakalau playing in the background. She would make leis to wear for church, for friends, for her hula halau, and to adorn her everyday attire.
Fast forward now to me raising my kids here on Maui. I began this last year making haku leis randomly for friends, then quickly gained momentum and found myself with a little side business I hadn’t anticipated. I love working with flowers they’re so forgiving – their beauty can’t be ruined.
And what’s more…flower crowns are sure to make any wahine feel that extra measure of beautiful, cared for, confident, and loved.
All of that being said…I’m proud to offer Hakus by Nicole to my clients!
