There are some wedding days that leave a lasting impression long after the final dance song has played, and Janki and Varoon’s Indian wedding in Maui at Olowalu Plantation House was absolutely one of them.
From the moment I arrived, I knew this was going to be a special day. The weather was perfect with clear skies, gentle trade winds, and the kind of Maui sunshine that photographers dream about. When we pair that with one of Maui’s most stunning oceanfront venues and an incredible team of vendors (when I say incredible, I mean it), all the ingredients were there for an unforgettable celebration.
Indian Wedding in Maui: A Warm Welcome to Family Traditions
One of the things I love most about photographing Indian weddings is the opportunity to document traditions and customs that have been passed down through generations. Every family celebrates a little differently, and every wedding teaches me something new. And it often felt like I was learning right along with Janki and Varoon! TBH, I loved that.
Janki and Varoon’s families were incredibly welcoming from the very beginning. Their warmth and hospitality made me feel like I wasn’t simply documenting a wedding; they made me feel like part of the family.
The ceremony itself was filled with beautiful traditions, heartfelt moments, and countless details that reflected the love and support surrounding this couple. Capturing these moments is one of my favorite parts of photographing Indian weddings. The symbolism, the emotion, and the vibrant celebration create such a rich story to tell through photographs.
Why I’m Always a Fan of a First Look
Janki and Varoon chose to do a first look before the ceremony.
I’m a huge advocate for first looks, especially at larger weddings, because they create an opportunity to spend meaningful time together before the whirlwind of the day begins. It also allowed us to capture additional portraits before guests arrived and before the ceremony officially started.
The result? More relaxed portraits, less pressure on the timeline, and extra moments for the couple to simply enjoy being together.
It’s one of the best ways to maximize photography coverage while reducing stress throughout the day.
The Baraat: My Favorite Part of the Day
If you’ve spent any amount of time around Indian weddings, you probably won’t be surprised when I say that my favorite part of the day was the Baraat.
There is simply nothing else quite like it. We were hitting midday and it was getting hot – but as soon as that music started playing and everyone started dancing, it was like we all forgot about the heat and we were on to the celebration!
The energy, the music, the dancing, and the pure joy are impossible not to get swept up in. Family and friends filled the road leading into Olowalu Plantation House with nonstop celebration as Varoon made his grand arrival in a classic Maui Roadster.
As a photographer, the baraat is a dream. I think I took more frames during that time than I did any other time of the day!
An Extended Cocktail Hour Done Right
After the ceremony, guests transitioned into an extended cocktail hour overlooking the ocean.
And then came the outfit change.
I may get myself into trouble for saying this, but I think I loved their second look even more than the traditional wedding attire.
One of the reasons I adore Indian weddings is the incredible vibrancy they bring to every part of the day. The celebration is colorful. The people are colorful. The traditions are colorful. And the fashion? Absolutely stunning.
Everywhere you turn, there’s another beautiful detail, another bold color palette, and another opportunity to create photographs that feel alive
Back to cocktail hour: If you’ve read my thoughts on the subject before, you’ll know I’m a strong believer in creating space for cocktail hour. It gives guests an opportunity to relax, connect, and enjoy the experience while also creating flexibility within the wedding timeline.

For Janki and Varoon, this extra time created a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and allowed everyone to truly soak in the beauty of Olowalu Plantation House.
A Maui Sunset That Stole the Show
Just when we thought the day couldn’t get any better, it was time for portraits!
The sky lit up with layers of color while the ocean reflected every shade imaginable. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love photographing weddings on Maui.
We slipped away for sunset portraits and were treated to one of those evenings where everything comes together perfectly. The light, the scenery, and the excitement of a newly married couple made for some truly unforgettable images – some even with the full moon!
Incredible Indian Food and an Unforgettable Dance Floor
After sunset portraits, we returned to an incredible dinner prepared by Chef Brian and the team at Cutting Edge Catering.
The food was exceptional and perfectly complemented the evening’s elevated atmosphere. Guests enjoyed a wonderful meal while sharing stories, laughter, and plenty of celebration.
And then the dance floor opened.
Holy smokes. These people know how to dance.
The energy never slowed down. From the first song to the final moments of the evening, the dance floor remained packed with family and friends celebrating Janki and Varoon’s new chapter together.
As a photographer, weddings like this are an absolute joy to document because there is never a shortage of authentic moments, laughter, and pure happiness. My feet may have hurt for the next two days, but it was worth it!
